Blue and White Porcelains and Chinese Crafts

Old blue and white porcelains which were produced in folk kilns of Jingdezhen at the end of Ming dynasty in China are known as kosometsuke. Their shapes vary, which were cherished by early tea masters, and extremely light touch paintings were applied. Soetsu Yanagi, founder of the Museum, said that these works remained genuine lives as blue and white porcelains, and appreciated them deeply. This exhibition introduces all the kosometsuke from our collection as well as Chinese distinct crafts, which had been produced in the course of the long history.

Soetsu Yanagi and The Korean Folk Art Museum
June 15th (Sat) to August 25th (Sun), 2024
The Asakawa brothers, Noritaka and Takumi, and Soetsu Yanagi found the beauty in crafts of the Joseon period, and established Korean Folk Art Museum in present Seoul. This year marks the 100th anniversary of its foundation. The exhibition follows the footsteps of the museum, display the works which were collected at that time as well as documents related to the museum, and verifies the importance of Korean Folk Art Museum, which was the first Korean crafts museum in the world.

The World of Keisuke Serizawa
September 5th (Thu) to November 20th (Wed), 2024
Dyer Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984) was a genius of a unique sense of color and patterns. Supported by his everyday sketches of his surroundings or what he saw in his daily life, his various works fascinate people’s minds. Also, this exhibition involves Serizawa’s collection, which Yanagi appraised with the comment ‘he could see the genuine beauty.’ On the coming occasion of the 130th anniversary of his birth, please enjoy the world of Serizawa’s hand and eyes.

New Works Competition and Exhibition, 2024

Dedicated to the pursuit of handicrafts quality for today and the future, the Museum sponsors an annual competition and sale of the selected works of modern craftspeople. Anyone can participate in the competition. The categories are ceramics, textiles (weaving and dyeing), wood work, lacquered ware, glass, metal, bamboo, straw, paper, and others.

Buddhist Aesthetics

Soetsu Yanagi finished the book ‘Bi-no-Ho-mon (the Dharma Gate of Beauty)’ in 1949, which is one of his main works. Yanagi had continued searching for the Buddhist aesthetics and intended to found the absolute structure of aesthetics throughout his life. This exhibition introduces documents relating to the Buddhist aesthetics as well as works which bear the Buddhist aesthetics found through Yanagi’s direct perception. The film of Yanagi’s lecture in October 1955 on Eastern philosophy will be also released for the first time.
